EVO Steel Reduces the Carbon Footprint of Söndrebalj School
As Skanska builds the new Söndrebalj School in Hjärnarp, the focus is on sustainability and circularity. The school, which is being built in accordance with the Miljöbyggnad 4.0 Silver environmental certification, is characterized by ambitious material choices. Because Europrofil became involved early in the design phase, traditional steel could be replaced with EVO steel—a solution that reduces the carbon footprint and optimizes the entire construction process.

Early collaboration laid the foundation for an optimized delivery plan
Building a modern F–9 school for 550 students that meets high environmental standards requires careful planning. To maximize the project’s efficiency and sustainability, Europrofil was brought in at an early stage. This close collaboration enabled Europrofil and Skanska to jointly develop a delivery plan tailored to the progress of the construction process.
Europrofil delivers steel that is precisely cut, fabricated, and packed in flat packs according to the project’s specific drawings. This minimizes waste at the construction site while also improving ergonomics for the installers on site.
“We have a long-standing partnership with Europrofil, which we rely on for many projects. We’re looking at alternatives, of course, and here we’re combining our past experience with new materials. Europrofil is at the forefront, and we at Skanska want to be at the forefront as well,” says Torbjörn Svensson, Site Manager at Skanska.
“We are very proud and happy that we had the opportunity to supply EVO steel to a project as large as this one actually is.”

EVO Steel Makes a Difference
The choice of EVO steel is a key part of the project’s strong environmental profile. This eco-friendly steel has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional steel, which helps the project meet the requirements for Miljöbyggnad 4.0 Silver certification.
“We’ve chosen EVO steel because it reduces our environmental impact and lowersCO2 emissions. The choice of materials is important for achieving the goals we set, and I believe it’s important for the future as well,” says Torbjörn Svensson.
By delivering the profiles pre-cut to exact lengths, the need for time-consuming cutting and adjustments on-site is eliminated. This saves valuable time, reduces material waste to a minimum, and improves logistics during installation.
“We are very proud and happy that we had the opportunity to supply EVO steel to a project as large as this one,” says Mikael Jakobsson, District Manager for West/North at Europrofil, and continues.
– As suppliers and contractors, we need to take steps to ensure that we reduce our climate impact. It’s a responsibility we really must take on. In a project like this—whether it involves public buildings such as schools or large residential projects with many apartments and tall buildings—it’s definitely an advantage to work with steel. It’s inorganic, it’s more ergonomic to carry and lift for the installers, and you can get it in specific lengths so we minimize waste.
